The Sin, Franz von Stuck

The Sin

Stuck painted Eve with an enormous python coiled around her shoulders, its head resting against her cheek. The whole story of the Fall of Man has been cut down to one figure and one snake. The serpent is not tempting her from a branch. It is draped over her like a fur. Stuck showed the first version at the inaugural Munich Secession in 1893, and it caused an instant sensation. The Neue Pinakothek bought it that year. He painted at least twelve versions after, each with the same drooping-eyed model. Adolf Hitler eventually owned one.
